MS-DOS is a microkernel (8k) based OS. I think it takes even less space if you use QEMM, which could put a few of those bytes in the 4k video memory if you opt to free some of it up and work in 40x16 mode. > > : 1. which one is the best with same hardware configuration? > > My Olivetti M24 (8086 on 8MHz) is very neat, but I heard some good things > about IBM AT too. If you buy a new PC, go for 1MB RAM. Most applications > need more than 640kB. Don't get the IBM AT, it is only 6MHz, the Compaq Deskpro runs at 8MHz. Also, with QEMM, which gave me an extra 17bytes free allocatable memory. I think it creates 11bytes of shared memory, which frees up 11bytes each from ibmio.com and ibmbios.com and uses 5 of them for addressing it. You don't know how much help that is, I can type in an extra 17 characters in edlin before the machine hangs. (I think WordStar has VM build in, where when one "pages" up and down the document, it detects page faults and does its own paging into VM(floppy) to access new pages and swap it back to memory.) > > : 2. which one require least hardware (CPU , RAM & Diskspace, etc)? > > MS-DOS even runs on an 8088 at 4.77MHz Don't forget, even if you have a powerful CPU that is capable of processing almost 40 million bits(4.77MHz * 8bit bus) a second. Or with lightning fast(25k/sec, who could read that fast) on-line storage that is more stable(with over 1.5e14 cycles MTBF (1*365*24*60*60*4.77e6) than the scrawlings on a granite tombstone, which with ~ 10million states(500k*8*2states(on/off)), any one of them being accessessable instantaniously. Or with infinite memory(640k(with 640K memory, and 360K floppy, how was VM implemented, I don't have to "swap" floppies to utilize the full swap space, maybe MS-DOS 2.1 has advanced VM features like virtual swap that is copied in SVR4 and Solaris 2,)) you can create a document using "copy con" for the rest of your life and not run out of memory. The point is that the slowest part of the computer is still your fingers. A 1 way interleaved memory bank can be accesses every 1microsecond, so you have to type 10,000,000wpm to be able to saturate the memory bus. > > : 3. which one with most easily installation ? > > MS-DOS only takes 1 360kB floppy It doesn't even need to be installed. 2.1 Runs directly off the single floppy. > > : 4. which one has highest Internet performance? > > Hey man, don't believe any guy telling you the Internet is surfable with > a 300-baud modem. You realy need the full-option 1200 baud modems. I think the best way to speed up performance is to create a RAMDISK with the AST SuperDrive and put the caching on it. Except all the slashes to the paths are backward "/" instead of the global standard "\". x\y\z means go up the branch, which make more sense(I guess that is why it is the global standard). And the ~user, is that like a goto statement in a batch file? and what is the purpose of the concept of users. And these long filenames not following the 8.3 global standard, people get carried away with the length, sometimes with 13.0 or 10.5.5(???). 8.3 was set as the de-facto standard because we can scan it the fastest. who wants to spend all day reading the name of files that reads like a book, with full word descriptions. I think it is because these people are running on these eunuch machines that are created by those people who graduated high school. Just because they could pass the GED, they think they could rule the world. Cheers :-) http://www.dos4ever.org:com2/a:\web\docpgfor.mat\curr_doc\index.htm ^ | Don't forget the port number(serial port 2) Don't access com1, that is my ddcopy(dos - dos copy) Be sure to call me before accessing the site so I could insert the proper floppy.
